Beer 101: From Farm to Glass

We kicked off the weekend with an introduction to our program leaders, Yard Owl Brewery, as they discussed the process of making beer, during each step from farm to table, including raw materials, technical details, and packaging. Along the way, we sampled beers that highlight the different ingredients and focus on sensory analysis.

We explored, tasted, and experienced the unique flavor of the Hudson Valley during this special event with displays from breweries, cider houses, distilleries, farms, and many other local vendors! Taste buds were tantalized by some of the Hudson Valley and New York’s finest! No Fee.

The Other Kind of Brewing

After a weekend of beer and the brewing process, we showcased the other kind of brewing, with coffee! Michelle Walsh, Roast Master at the Mudd Puddle Café, along with James Walsh and Joe Dolan of Yard Owl Beer discussed the art of coffee roasting, different ways to brew coffee, and the process of adding coffee to beer.

Twenty-four years ago, James and Michelle Walsh combined their shared excitement for the restaurant business and opened Mudd Puddle Café in New Paltz, NY. Fresh roasted coffee, hand-crafted food, and a warm community space have been the focus since day one. In 2014, they expanded their passion for fine-crafted beverages by opening Yard Owl Brewery in Gardiner, NY. Here, James brews Belgian-inspired beers which can be tasted and bought at their restaurant Mudd Puddle Cafe’ in New Paltz.

John Newhall, a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Newburgh, NY, has always had music in his blood. From early memories of his mom playing Billy Joel’s Greatest Hits on car rides to humming songs and writing them down as a child, music has been a constant companion. Although he briefly attended The College of Saint Rose in Albany for music, he realized it wasn’t the right path for him and left to pursue music independently while teaching music at various private schools. Despite facing challenges with self-promotion and confidence, Newhall’s dedication paid off, with thousands of followers and monthly listeners between Instagram, TikTok, and Spotify. His unique blend of folk-inspired singer-songwriter music, coupled with his engaging social media presence, is setting the stage for a promising future in the industry.

Hillbilly Parade is a Pop-Rock Country party band. Established in 2014, Hillbilly Parade has become one of the most sought-after Top 40 Country Cover Bands in the Hudson Valley, playing more than 250 shows a year including private parties and weddings. Most known for their witty stage humor, line dancing, and high-energy tuneful sets, Hillbilly Parade is sure to get any crowd’s attention. Hillbilly Parade isn’t just your regular cover band. They’ve walked on stage before notable acts like Rodney Atkins, Eric Paslay, and Jerrod Nieman. With a collective 30-plus years of experience in music; both live performance and professional training, Hillbilly Parade strives to be more than just “background music”.
